Permanent Makeup

Imagine looking just as good first thing in the morning as you did the night before. Who wouldn’t want to look their best at every time of day? Taking the time to apply makeup is often a hassle—not to mention the frequent touch-ups and nightly removals involved. Imagine knowing that your makeup always looks perfect and not having to worry about it melting in the humidity, smearing in the pool or sweating off during a workout.

The process of permanent cosmetics involves inserting pigments into the dermal layer of the skin. The most popular applications are eyeliner, lipstick, lip liner and eyebrows. Permanent lipstick and lip liner give more definition, evenness and fullness to lips. Permanent makeup provides a more natural, softer look than regular makeup, but you will still be able to apply regular makeup as well.

Permanent cosmetics have been around for thousands of years but became a growing trend in the 1970s. Cosmetologists have extensive color theory training and can help choose the best color palette for you. Eyebrows are the most requested permanent cosmetics procedure, with basic eyeliners and lip coloring coming in second and third. Advanced procedures include eye shadow, full lips, breast and scar re-pigmentation/camouflage and cheek blush.

Q&A

What are some of the advantages of permanent cosmetics?

Permanent cosmetics are perfect for the busy person who has little or no time to apply regular makeup; the athlete who wants to look natural; those with oily skin whose makeup seems to disappear a short time after applying it; those allergic to conventional makeup; and people with limited or shaky hand movement, poor eyesight or contact lenses.

Can I apply regular cosmetics over my permanent makeup?

Because permanent cosmetics are applied in the skin, and conventional cosmetics are applied over the skin, regular makeup will cover permanent cosmetics, if you want to change up your look temporarily.

Is dermapigmentation (cosmetic tattooing) permanent?

Although it is considered to be a permanent procedure, a slight amount of fading may occur, and maintenance applications may be necessary in the years after receiving permanent cosmetics. The color and/or style of the makeup may be altered slightly by an experienced practitioner.

Who is the best at applying permanent makeup?

Highly skilled dermapigmentation specialists (permanent makeup technicians) with years of experience are the ideal candidates for permanent makeup application. Other qualities to look for include an eye for symmetry, knowledge of facial structure types, good hand-eye coordination and motor skills, a steady hand and good eyesight. Your specialist will be happy to assist you in determining the best color and style for you.

How long does each procedure take?

Each permanent cosmetics procedure takes approximately an hour to complete. Many clients even return to work after receiving an application during lunchtime.

Are there any risks involved?

Anytime the skin is broken, there is a risk of infection. After the procedure, the treated area should be kept clean and medicated for a few days, until the healing process is completed. Also, the chance of developing an allergic reaction to pigment from a permanent makeup is very low.

Should extra precautions be taken before a lip procedure?

If you’ve ever had a fever blister, we recommend that you request a prescription for Zovirax capsules (the antiviral medication) from your physician prior to a lip procedure.

Is there any discomfort involved in applying permanent makeup?

The amount of pain involved in permanent cosmetics is often overestimated. Because of the delicate areas targeted in these procedures, some discomfort may be experienced. New topical anesthetics have been developed especially for these procedures. The use of a topical anesthetic, combined with a relaxing atmosphere, is most beneficial in creating a comfortable environment for your procedure. The use of ibuprofen before a procedure can also help reduce discomfort associated with swelling.

What about sterilization and sanitation?

The staff at The Wall Center follows the Centers for Disease Control recommendations for sterilization and sanitation. Each needle that we use is pre-packaged and disposable. Please be warned that your health and safety are of utmost importance to us.

Can I talk to others who have permanent makeup?

We encourage you to talk to those who have had the procedure(s) in which you are interested. We will gladly provide you with a list of references upon request.

Are permanent makeup procedures expensive?

Fees for cosmetics procedures vary at The Wall Center. Call us to find out specific prices. Keep in mind that the money you invest in permanent cosmetics will provide years of effortless beauty and will reduce the amount of money you spend on regular makeup.

Will I need more than one appointment?

At the time of your initial application, a follow-up visit will be scheduled to “perfect” your color. There is no additional charge for this visit. Slight maintenance check-ups may be required in the months or years to come. These appointments do come with a fee.
